Robert Gerhard (1896–1970): Streichquartett Nr. 2
Dimitri Schostakowitsch (1906–1975): Streichquartett Nr. 7 fis-Moll op. 108
Peter I. Tschaikowsky (1840–1893): Streichquartett Nr. 1 D-Dur, op. 11

They have known each other since their school days and play chamber music together today. Our debut series presents the Gerhard Quartet from Spain. They take their name from the Schoenberg student Robert Gerhard, Catalonia’s most famous composer, whose string quartet they will also perform in Hitzacker. Their joint studies took the four musicians to Basel with Rainer Schmidt, to Berlin with Eberhard Feltz, and to Hanover with Oliver Wille. In their program, compiled especially for Hitzacker, they play not only the music of their namesake but also the chamber music work with which Tchaikovsky first presented himself to a broad public, as well as Shostakovich's Seventh String Quartet – a compact, compressed, intense work lasting twelve minutes, in which the movements transition into each other. Shostakovich dedicated the work to his deceased first wife.

Ludwig v. Beethoven (1770–1827): Klaviertrio D-Dur op. 70 Nr. 1 "Geistertrio"
Paul Hindemith (1895–1963): Quartett für Klarinette, Violine, Cello und Klavier
Igor Strawinsky (1882–1971): Drei Stücke für Klarinette solo
Maurice Ravel (1875–1937): Klaviertrio a-Moll

A multicolored piano trio, or to quote the BBC:  "Thrillingly played by the Sitkovetsky Trio, which more than fully exploits Ravel's expressive possibilities and ambitions in his attempt to expand the musical language of the form". Violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, pianist Wu Qian and cellist Isang Enders will also be relying on their German-Israeli star guest, clarinetist Sharon Kam, to attain the special number “Four” in the festival program and to explore Hindemith's Quartet, a too rarely played masterpiece of classical modernism.
