Franz Schubert (1797–1828): Quintett C-Dur für zwei Violinen, Viola und 2 Violoncelli, D 956 op. post. 163
Helmut Lachenmann (*1935): Streichquartett Nr. 3, Grido (ca. 28’)
Schubert’s C Major Quintet is often referred to as a tonal enigma. In fact, it is impossible to explain its combination of unique tonal intensity and auratic enrapturement. Composed as it was in the early Romanticist’s final months, it seems to be opening a door to another form of existence. It is fitting that the profound Latvian star cellist Mischa Maisky will be joining us for this exquisite highlight. Just as fitting is the performance of a work by Helmut Lachenmann, who described his “trauma” of having to write a string quartet in the 21st century as “a combination of fear and enthusiasm…where the familiar suddenly becomes foreign when the will to creativity clashes with it”.
